Bank statement examples

Two fictional statements, one US and one UK, with every part labelled. Use them to understand your own statement or to see what the converter extracts. No real bank's layout is reproduced.

Anatomy of a statement

Statements vary in appearance but share the same components. Reading from the top:

Header
Bank name, account holder, address, and the account identifiers: account number with a routing number (US), sort code (UK), transit number (Canada), BSB (Australia) or IBAN (Europe).
Statement period
From and to dates. Some banks also print the statement date and a page count such as page 1 of 3.
Summary box
Opening balance, total deposits or money in, total withdrawals or money out, fees, interest and closing balance. When present, these totals are checked against the transaction table.
Transaction table
One row per transaction: date (sometimes transaction and posting dates), description, an amount in a debit or credit column or a single signed column, and usually a running balance.
Balance lines
Beginning or brought-forward balance at the top and ending or carried-forward balance at the bottom. They are metadata, not transactions.
Footer
Interest rates, fee schedules, dispute instructions and regulatory notices.

Example 1: US checking account with posting dates

Bank: Northgate Bank (fictional)

Account: Everyday Checking ****2210

Statement period: 08/01/2026 to 08/31/2026

Page: 1 of 2

08/3108/31Monthly service fee12.009,300.63
08/31Ending balance9,300.63
  • Two date columns: the card purchase happened on 08/03 and posted on 08/04. Converters keep both; the transaction date is normally used for exports.
  • Dates are printed without a year in MM/DD order; the year comes from the statement period.
  • Withdrawals and Deposits are separate columns, so signs are unambiguous.
  • Check: 8,420.00 + 2,820.00 − 1,939.37 = 9,300.63, and each balance follows from the previous row.
  • The description Card purchase Fresh Market #214 Portland OR wraps onto two lines on the printed page; it is merged into one row on extraction.

Example 2: UK current account with money in and money out

Bank: Wexford & Bell (fictional)

Sort code / account: 00-00-00 / ****9187

Statement period: 1 August 2026 to 31 August 2026

Currency: GBP

Transaction table as printed

28 Aug 2026FPO J Patel ref Birthday40.002,259.85
31 Aug 2026Balance carried forward2,259.85
  • Dates are day first (DD Mon YYYY). A converter that assumed US order would fail on 14 Aug and misdate the rest.
  • Descriptions start with transaction type codes: FPI and FPO (faster payment in and out), DD (direct debit), SO (standing order), CPM (card payment), ATM.
  • Check: 1,250.00 + 2,100.00 − 1,090.15 = 2,259.85.
  • Money out and Money in are synonyms for debit and credit; the converter maps them by meaning.

What the converted output looks like

Both statements export to the same accounting-profile CSV columns regardless of their printed layout. The UK example becomes:

DateDescriptionDebitCreditBalance
2026-08-03FPI Hollis & Grey Ltd salary Aug2100.003350.00
2026-08-05DD Meridian Energy96.403253.60

2026-08-21ATM Withdrawal High St50.002299.85
2026-08-28FPO J Patel ref Birthday40.002259.85

Balance lines are recorded as statement metadata (opening 1,250.00, closing 2,259.85) rather than as rows, dates are ISO, amounts are plain decimals, and the currency is GBP in the full profile and in the Excel and JSON exports.
